Learning Through the Arts

The Eel Ground School has been involved with the Learning Through the Arts program for the last few years. LTTA is an arts-driven education program that uses creative methods to engage all students in math, science, language arts and social studies.
This year the teachers and students really enjoyed working with LTTA artists Geraldine Allain and Heather Johnston on several different projects. We would also like to thank Peggy Ward from LTTA and the Atlantic Canada's First Nation Help Desk for their support in the implementation of these activities.
The following are examples of some of the work the students produced working with the LTTA artists:

Totem Poles

The grade 3 and 4 class have been working with LTTA Artist Heather Johnston on a totem pole unit. Their teacher, Robert McKay, provided background information on the history, purpose and construction of totem poles. Students then worked with Heather to created their own totem poles using boxes, tape and paint. As a final activity in this unit, students used digital cameras to take pictures of their totem poles, imported their images into iPhoto, and then used iMovie to create short videos of their totem poles.

Eel Ground's Breakfast Program

Good nutrition and a balanced diet will help our child grow up healthy. Futhermore, research has shown that beginning the day with a healthy breakfast will significantly improve students' academic and social performance.
The students at the Eel Ground School would like to thank Canadian Feed the Children for their support of Eel Ground School's Breakfast program. Without this support, providing breakfast for our students would not be possible.

NHL Great Visits Eel Ground

Last Saturday, NHL Great, Brian Trottier visited students at the Eel Ground School. He spent 2 hours with a group of students and community members.
Mr. Trottier was very accomodating with the kids. He took photos with them, signed autographs and played some floor hockey with them. He told them he would be back in the Fall to visit the school again and possibly run a hockey clinic for those interested. Before Mr. Trottier left, Chief Ginnish presented him with an Eel ground Flag signed by the kids and parents.
